How to Get Along With Yourself

Your relationship that you have with yourself is arguably the most important one in and throughout your life. Think about everything that stems from this self to self relationship, if you don't like something about yourself. Let's focus on things we love about ourselves instead of what we dislike, easier said than done.

The problem is that comparison has been setting the standard of who we think we should be and how we should be. It's gotten to a point of us picking out things we dislike daily, every hour even. I get it more than anyone, I'm extremely critical of myself, on all fronts. However, you need to realize everyone is different and now, in this social media epidemic of a generation, it's crucial for you to define yourself via you. Social media has set the definition for kids, teens, adult, all populations, on what we should look like, how we should be succsssful, what's normal, what's healthy, what is none of that. We get so caught up in these regulatory guidelines presented by people who are in fact not in love with themselves entirely, that we deem our bodies and peronalities unfit.

I urge you to start journaling or get a white board. Wake up and write something you love about yourself. Something you're grateful for in your life that makes you special. Just because a fitness model on instagram has the body you want and is always smiling, doesn't mean he/she is living their best life. We all have insecurities, even Beyonce does, well I'm guessing with that one! You may not have the flattest stomach, dislike your shape, hair color, eyebrows, hands, legs; we are all imperfectly perfect. You may have no care for what people think about you, you may have an affinity for poetry, singing, architectural design, photography, writing, teaching, crafts, science...we all have attributes that someone else might not. You need to embrace these. Look in the mirror, lean about yourself, love yourself, there is much to love.

I like to refer to an amazing movie, The Help, in which Viola Davis recites,

"You is kind, you is smart, you is important."
